Losing a Beloved Pet

It is very easy to underestimate the impact of the loss a beloved pet, be it a cat, dog, guinea pig, horse, bird, or any other of the wonderful animals we have as companions.

All pet lovers must face the death of their pets, sooner or later.

When we lose an animal from our lives, maybe an animal we have had in our care for ten or fifteen years, of course it leaves a very large space in our hearts. The house can seem very empty, indeed. When you lose your animal, there is also the lose of companionship, comfort, security and love to cope with.

It is important to acknowledge the feelings of grief and loss, anger, and even guilt if we have made the heart-rending choice of pet euthanasia. We can know that we made the best and most humane choice for our friend, but the pain goes on.

You may find other people do not understand the depths of your feelings or worse, have people constantly suggest you 'just need to get another cat' or dog, or fish, or turtle. Others may make comments such as 'it's just a dog', 'it's just a rabbit'. However, the pain and loss felt at the death of a pet is very deep and very real.

This is a time to look after your own needs and come to terms with the loss in the best way for you.
